you could put some hanging baskets or troughs on the black wall and grow some strawberries I would plant some low growing cannas behind the pond with some iris and/or alliums for early spring

Have you by any chance got a lot of onions Roofy? I love the black wooden cladding but suspect that the owners wouldn't like you fixing anything to it to grow a climber over it so I think something like a 'standard' type small tree in a large pot would look good against it, maybe a lollipop shaped bay tree, you could use the leaves in cooking as well as it looking good, or maybe a small olive tree?

You're reading my mind, SueA. I was toying with the idea of putting Boris the Bay Tree there !

The First Planting !
Well, I guess everything has to start SOMEWHERE. My first actual activity in my new garden was to clear out a small bed adjacent to the pond. It was full of tangled bracken and roogs n' tha. I dug it all out, discovering a huge amount of bulbs/corms/rhizones. I saved about 12 of these just in case they are actually desirable plants. As ever, you can click on the pictures to see a full-screen version. This should open in a new window or tab, so you won't lose your place in Garden Friends.

Afterwards.... Having planted 10 Hyacinths that I got on special offer from Liddle, attractively priced at £0.59 each ! |
| |
| Now, THIS amused me. At first I thought it was a concrete plinth with lichen on. Then I realised it is a really small hedge. But I discovered on Sunday that it is actaully.. heather. It's going to look amazing when the blossom blooms. |
| In fact... I think it has started already ? |
| Say hello to Mr Spade, a very welcome present from my Father. I asked him if I could borrow HIS spade over the weekend, and then when I went to visit... there it was... a new spade. It's got a very narrow blade, which is perfect for borders ! It's also REALLY sturdy. |
Well, that's all for the moment. Next weekend... planting seeds in my Polytunnel ! Oh the excitement !

good work roofy I take it your landlady is under the newly planted hyacinths then Don't be RIDICULOUS, grindle. You can't go around burying landladies under the Hyacinths. It would cause a public outrage !! No, she's under the Daffodils !

Here is a lollipop shaped bay tree that I prepared a little earlier (it came from my previous roofgarden). (click on the picture to see a larger lollipop). Mind you, it's not particularly lollipop shaped at the moment. Some work with the secateurs required, methinks ?

Gravel Gardening.
You know, all these years I've been buying "gravel trays" to cluster my little 1" seed pots together. I've also wondered why they have a dimpled, uneven base. (causing my seed pots to tilt over). I was starting to plant seeds into aforementioned pots, so I grabbed one of my newer gravel trays, and noticed a photograph on the label that was still stuck to the tray. And... it showed a bed of gravel in the gravel tray !! This was a revelation. All these years, I'd been using ungravelled gravel trays. A grave gravelly ommission !! Well, I leapt into my car, and sped off to the local garden centre (Timmermans), and bought a bag of gravel !!
| It was rather heavy, so I only took it as far as my patio rather than hauling it into the polytunnel, and brought the gravel trays out to IT for filling !
Click on the picture to see larger gravel |
| I've cleared a LOT of clutter out into my garden storage bins, leaving the shelving unit (mostly) free for seed trays !! These have seed pots in filled with compost, but no actual seeds sown yet. I'll be clearing up more space to put another 4 trays in !
Each seed tray holds 12 seed pots... so there will be 144 seed pots on the three shelves !
|
| Six trays are out on my workbench.. these have actually got SEEDS sowed (as opposed to just seed pots filled with compost). They are Cosmos (two trays), Nigella (two trays), and Malcomus Maritimus (night scented stock)..... |
| A slightly wide-angle shot
Egads... my tools are just slouching around...
|
|
TeeeeeeenHUT... stand to attention, you ORRIBLE little tools !
Much better !
|
Well, thats all for now. This coming weekend I shall be Planting The Honesty (honestly, I really will).

it's all looking very tidy and productive now roofie I like your hanging tools, I do this with mine using an old shelf from a greenhouse and some s hooks they are so much easier to find than languishing in a drawer

I'm much less organised, my hand tools all just tend to be stuffed into a bucket in the greenhouse. Watch you don't take your eye out with those dangling scissors Roofy1
