Polytunnel and garden looking great roofgardener ! It's no consolation but my tomatoes and peppers are slow this year too. I hope you can get rid of your caterpillars.
Thanks Eli. I've been plucking them off every day for two weeks And yet still there are more. Almost every leaf on the plant has been destroyed NEXT year, I will spray the nasturtions with some sort of butterfly-repellent. Or possibly buy a shotgun !

September
Well, the summer is all but over, although we've had a FEW nice sunny days. So here is a few photographs of the Cottage Garden that I took over last weekend. As ever, the piccies are posted on the RoofNet, so you can click on them to see a bigger picture.
| The Wooden Gate, looking quite resplendent with the Sweet Pea and Cosmos flowers finally coming into bloom. It seemed to take ages for anything to bloom, but over the last 4-5 weeks it's finally come into its own. I'm now pondering on what sort of flowers to use NEXT year |
| The patio is looking nice and green. Unfortunately, so are the gaps between the patio bricks.... I need to buy a new patio wire brush thingy !
|
| About 5 weeks ago I took everything out of the polytunnel, and put it outside in the sun. The tomatoes are a failure (although the small cherry tomatoes are doing OK). The chilli plants are going into overdrive and producing HUGE amounts of chilli's. Sadly.... the entire crop appears to be entirely flavourless. |
I forgot to take photographs of my little "flower bed" area.... it's actually quite nice now, with the Sweet Peas and Cosmos battling it out for height, and the Californian Poppies and Dahlia's holding forth at ground level. Oh.. and I've ALSO forgotten to take photographs of the runner beans. Again, these where very slow to germinate, but now they are producing LOADS of really nice tasty runner beans. I'll post piccies of these after the coming weekend, and perhaps start outlining my plans for next year. I'm going to need lots of help and input from everybody ! late add... ZOMG.. I've forgotten to mention the Sunflower Competition. Ah well... next week perhaps

It all looks nice & lush Roofy. If you want hot chillies can I suggest 'Fuego' , I grew a plant of it this year from a free offer & it nearly blew our heads off- I do normally only like mild chillies though but I think the clue is probably in the name 'Fuego' meaning 'Fire'! Morning glories might look good growing up your gate, I love the blue ones but they tend to get eaten by slugs here.

If you have any, would you be interested in swapping for hundreds of completely mild flavourless chilli's ? Hmm... morning glories... I will look them up.. thanks

I would send you some of the seeds Roofy if I had any but it was a plug plant when I got it & it's an F1 hybrid variety so if you try & save seeds from inside the actual chilli to sow the next year they won't turn out the same as the parent plant. Be careful what you get if you search 'Morning Glory', better using the Latin name 'Ipomoea' !

October
Winter Beckons, and there is only one day of October remaining In some ways, it is a sad time of year, with flowers and vegetables alike all dying back. Still, I've had a good season. Chilli News I've grown a HUGE crop of chilli's. Probably 60+ of them. The only problem is... they're feeble. You'd get more flavour and heat by sucking an ice-cube. They have almost literally no flavour AT ALL. I don't know what has happened Runner Beans Still, not to despair. After a slow start, my runner bean plants have performed fantastically. Buckets of beans I did my "final" harvest last weekend. Only to discover that there are STILL juvinile beans growing ! I'm guessing this coming weekend will the real "final" harvest, and then I'll take the plant down.

Well, it seems to have been drizzling for 5 weeks now. I havn't been able to mow the lawn for that long It's a kinda depressing time of year, with everything dying. Still, I've already started making Grand Plans for the spring. Meanwhile, I'm going to hospital with suspected Iritis. I had this 2 years ago. If things go to form, they will want to inject me in the eyeball. < shudder > . I'll let you know how it goes

Hope it goes well for you roofgardener, it is a depressing time of year anyway without having something like that as well. Keep thinking positive thoughts & the fact that the days will start getting longer again in a few weeks & the spring bulbs will be up in no time.

Thanks Eli The doctor says it is getting better, and they didn't need to inject me again PLUS... I managed to dash out on Sunday morning and mow my lawn, JUST before the rain came down. On the minus side, I've managed to break my strimmer

Glad you didn't need the injection roofgardener ...
I think you can still plant bulbs. I think they will be fine if they haven't shrivelled up. I was very late last year - January. Most of them came up but some didn't flower.
