Harrogate spring show has gone too, as well as Malvern. Not holding my breath for the Autumn shows.

Hi all , I'm having a really poor propagating year this year. I would say only about 40% of my tubers have come to life some having been on heat since early January. I've tried hot water, splitting tubers, black bags etc but no luck. I should just about have enough to grow the same numbers as previous years but only just. I only grow for the garden anyway but in previous years I've been struggling for space for all the cuttings I've taken and gifted them to neighbours and friends. Frustrating!
Johndoe, will you still grow in numbers despite not having shows to attend?
To all on Garden Friends, stay safe over the next few weeks months.

Hi johndoe, thanks for the reply. Yes a bit disappointed but I am just about going to get enough cuttings for myself topped up with a few from Halls of Heddon should fill my beds so all is not lost, just friends and neighbours who will miss out . I had a go at pot tubers last year so I've had a mix of both types of tubers but still a lot of blanks. Most have rooted but no eyes opening on around half of them. Just when I thought I knew what I was doing too!!😃
Your plots look huge, how many will you got into them?

Hi JJ, last year I had just over 700, but will have less this year as I'm giving the giants a bit more space between each plant.
If your need any plants just let me know and I'll see what I've got.
Take care.

Hi johndoe, Thanks for the kind offer but I'm sure my better half will enjoy a year where my dahlias don't take up most of the garden.😃

Hi all, back with another question. As I've said in my other posts my tubers aren't firing this year for some reason. My question is how long do I give them before binning them. I suppose I'm asking how long from an eye opening to enough growth for a cutting? We're into April next week so the window is slowly closing.

Johnjess I think you've given them enough time to wake up JJ. I dumped my un-responsive tubers three weeks ago. You could give them another week or two now the days are longer if you are desperate for a particular variety.

Hi. Been off the forum for some time due to bad back issues and not being able to dig or anything since last August. I lost my mojo for a long time but after 3 weeks I can finally say the grounds are back to how they were in 2018 and while I am very behind and currently not running with any heat today I have potted 2 rooted cuttings and I have about 100 cuttings that are not floppy yet! Obviously everything is up in the air with Covid19 but whatever happens just enjoy the growing folks

Here is a long shot but do any forum members have any stock of our late friend Terry Haigh's Birkenshaw GARDEN friends? His amazing dark red collerettethat I may purchase? Due to our bad season we have lost a lot of stock and we are down to our last 2 tubers. They haven't woken up yet and I would love to build our stocks again...

Hope you, Che and the family are okay. I've got Garden-Friends still. I've just taken a couple of cutting and got a couple potted up so I'll send you one or two when I send you the Elma E I promised.
Take care and stay safe.

Hi everyone, I'm back for more advice if anyone can help please.
My order from H of H arrived about ten days ago and I potted them up on the day they arrived. They are now growing on a bit but they all have buds and on some of them the side shoots are growing even though they haven't been 'stopped'. I have never experienced this problem before could anyone advise me what to do to sort this issue.I'm not sure if it's important but the plants are Josudi Hercules.
Thank you in advance.
Johnjess
Ps Great to see you back Cat.

Hi johnjess Hope you are well. Pinch out those flower buds. When the flowers form this tells the plant to stop growing so by removing bud the side shoots will grow on.

So today I got rid of about 18 tubers that hadn't started. Tomorrow I should be able to take another batch of cuttings with luck. We are currently rooting without bottom heat as it is so hot. The boss and I put some shading up in the greenhouse and we are even laying shading over the cuttings to reduce temperatures. By doing this we are running at approx. 20 at night and 26 to 30 during the day(thermometer placed on top of cutting tray)...and that is with the door and vents open.
