Something I've read about and seen pics but this is the first time I've actually witnessed it. In back yard saw a jackdaw which didn't look quite right then joined by another two. After watching for a while I realised what they were doing but just to be sure I had a look when they were gone and sure enough there were ants where they were laying down all wings spread out. First time for everything.

never heard of that before sweetpea I've seen blackbirds do it on the lawn when it's very hot, no idea why other than cooling themselves down ?

Apparently it is to let ants remove any pests from their foliage in a similar way as some birds peck out pests from crocodile teeth and some fish do the same for sharks. A sort of symbiosis if you like.

They go to where they know the insects are and spread their wings out in anticipation
