Everyone's probably familiar with Sloe Gin but Elderberry Gin (or Vodka) is definitely worth trying too.
I'll post the recipe with pics soon as I've just let the cat (Poppy in from outside) and going back to bed 😂

(From 2018) Plant related (along with alcohol related😁). Came across this amazingly productive Elderberry bush out on a walk near Branxton (Flodden Battle site). Every single shoot was pendulous with the weight of its ripe berries. I'll be back to take some hardwood cuttings off it in November! Elderberry Gin: Steep 225g elderberries and 115g sugar in 600ml gin or vodka, with a twist of lemon peel. Seal tightly and leave for about 3-4 months before straining and bottling (and drinking🙂). Remove Elderberries off whole head with a fork. I rinsed the heads first, then removed directly into the jars on some scales until desired amount was reached. It states in recipe to remove as many green unripe fruits from the mix as these are slightly toxic. A few dont matter though! Add sugar and spirit (gin or vodka) and the lemon peel though try not to get the white pith in as this makes it bitter.

Incidentally, regarding the cuttings, I took some hardwood cuttings in November off said tree (it was so good). Stuck them in the ground and they had rooted by spring. I lifted them and potted them up and will be planting them out into their permanent places soon. Lifting in late spring Temporary pot until new site for them.

Oi, who are you calling 'green fingered' sweetpea! I don't actually drink very much at all & we have got a bottle of gin in the cupboard which my half brother gave my O.H. for Christmas the year before last so I might try the elderberry gin recipe to use some of it.

Actually SueA I seldom drink these days. Seen too many problems caused by it. Not me but others. Never liked gin anyway and now its just the occasional social drink though actually can't recall last time. (Amnesiac) Believe it or not we use vodka to euthenise badly diseased fish when there is no chance of recovery.

Brilliant Fractal. I am not a gin drinker, but this looks really good, and because it is elderberry, just a little different. This will make good Christmas presents. I am a wine drinker.
