I am hoping this doesn't come across as a moan but there are times when I think some gardeners are just down right rude. let me explain:
I regularly give talks to gardening groups and usually have plants for sale. The way I work out the price for example: Bulbs worked out at cost so 10 bulbs at £3 is 30p/bulb. If there are 3 in a pot then we are up to 90p. 12p/litre compost and the pot is free. So I then will ask for £1.50, takes into account time/watering/feed etc. Usually people are happy to pay but last night I got some strange responses, mainly the bulbs could be bulk bought and I am 'making a killing'. I was rather hurt especially as the money I make goes to our local hospice.
I was selling 5 Iris Katherine Hodgkin for £2 a pot and they are well on and grown outside.
Am I over pricing? what do you think?

They sound like perfectly reasonable prices to me seaburn, some people are just 'tight-fisted' as we say around here! I would make some sort of sign to put with the pots though saying that profits go to the hospice as someone saying you must be making a killing suggests they think all the money is going to you. I know times are hard & that lots of members of gardening societies are pensioners but they could just not buy rather than pass comments like that.

I do tell the audiences that the money goes to the local hospice and how I grow them so they know that they are suitable for our area. At one club I spoke to 3 years ago they asked for evidence! I was able to show the letter the hospice had sent me thanking me for the £379 donation. The club didn't even respond and I wont talk there now, even though it is quite local to me.
The local GC charge much much more, £1.99 for a pot of 3 Katherine Hodgkin! It sort of takes the pleasure away which is a pity as I am told my talks are entertaining.

Sounds reasonable to me. I used to get the same sort of response at time when I was selling stuff too. Skinflints in every walk of life.

I don't think you've overpriced your plants, they are fair when compared to plants in a garden centre. You'd think people would be willing to give to a charity but I find most people are mean and selfish. I think adverts from charities promising cash prizes don't help. It encourages people to give because they have a chance to win lots of money - the wrong reason for giving to a charity. Morally one should give willingly to a charity without expecting something in return.

Nothing wrong with your pricing at all, you just can't please some people. Makes you wonder why you bother doesn't it. We often get odd remarks at our plant sales in the spring

Thank you all for your encouraging words. I know I am in Yorkshire and the stereotype is deep pockets and short arms but I find your responses very re-assuring.
