For those of you who like a mystery or puzzle if you like I have one for you. I am trying to find out if a particular Dahlia is still available and if so where I can get it. The name of the Dahlia is "Turf Moor" named after Burnley Football Clubs ground. Colne where I live is just a few miles from Burnley. It was raised circ 1959 by a gentlemen named Joe Barwise who was well known in the in the UK Dahlia growing community as one of the best of his generation. He lived in Towneley an area of Burnley and was one of the head gardeners at the then Towneley Nurseries. There is a nursery there now but nothing to do with the original. The Dahlia is classed as a Small Decorative and the color is classed as PU BLS. PU being Purples, Wines or Violets to include solferino purple, indian lake, magenta, magenta rose, ruby red, garnet lake, purple madder, peony purple, dianthus purple, beetroot purple, maroon, petunia purple, imperial purple, royal purple, amethyst violet and violet. BLS being Varieties in which two or more colours are intermingled and gradually merge into each other and are not provided for in the PU list. There is a catalogue entry for this with the NDS that I think is CD9 That is all the info I have to date. If anyone knows of how to get further info or may have some already please let me know. I would be most grateful.

Thanks for the reply seaburn. I have tried the RHS plant finder but no results come up. I have also had a look at the NDS website but there is no catalog or search facility available there. I have also contacted the secretary at the NDS through the website but as yet I have had no reply.

Winchester Growers who hold the national collection of dahlias do not have it listed either.

I wonder if someone in the Burnley area who is a Burnley football supporter has it. I wonder if they would ask the crowd for you at half time. ;D

Dave Bates's World of Dahlias is a good source of info (which Tel probably refers to now and again?) but he does not have any commercial growers as stocking this cultivar.
There are so many that have disappeared from the commercial lists, a great pity. Some, because they were a generally weak strain (as was the pompon named after me - Master Richard) , others because there was no popular demand and a commercial grower has to grow cultivars that will sell.

Thanks richardr. Some of the info I have so far came from Dave Bates site. I was given a piece of info today that made me think I was on to something. I guy suggested to me that a Dahlia named Moor Place had been hybridized from Turf Moor by Newnham but after doing a search on tinternet I found that it was indeed hybridized by Newnham in 1955 and is a Pom Pom Dahlia. Turf Moor is registered as being raised in 1959 four years later as a Small Decorative. The only thing I can think of is that Turf Moor may have been hybridized from Moor Place but would this be possible with Moor Place being a Pom Pom and Turf Moor being a Small Decorative?

Just an update on this elusive Dahlia. I received a reply to day to an email I sent to Ken Stock. I am sure you all know who he is. Unfortunately he could not offer any more info on this but has kindly put something on the front page of his website, what a gent he is. Hopefully this may catch the eye of someone who maybe able to shed some light on this one way or the other.

Just a quick update. I have not found or received any new information on the elusive Turf Moor. My wife has suggested I contact 2BR our local radio station by email. They are big supporters and sponsors of Burnley football club who's ground Turf Moor is named after. I am going to ask if they would kindly put out a request for any information on Joe Barwise or the Dahlia Turf Moor. You never know a relative or local grower may just be listening. Fingers crossed.

What a good idea SirP. Your local gardening programme would be a good source of information too. I know ours in Norfolk would handle that kind of enquiry.

Hey, been reading a bit about dahlias. The server at work was down so couldn't get to my files and decided to read a bit.
Any update on this Turf Moor dahlia that SirP has been looking for? There has been a mention of a
Mr. Joe Barwise, V.M.H., the talented head of Towneley Nurseries in Lancashire. An octogenarian (who still writes better than many a quarter his age), Joe has been introducing new varieties for over half a century. One of his latest ’Newby”.
Apparently this Mr. Barwise is a member of the Midlands Dahlia Society. I wonder if he's still with us though, as the news about him was dated 2009.
Modified...
I don't mean anything by wondering if Mr. Barwise is still alive and well, it's just that the news was way back 3 years ago and it said he was already an octogenarian then.
Can't find any other contact info for the MDS except this
Midlands Dahlia Society phone 024 7641 6366

Newby is from 1951, so if it was one of his latest when that was written, Joe Barwise is in a better place by now. I keep an eye out for Newby. It has been in this country, and was apparently my grandmother's favourite Dahlia. The NDS has it in the UK, but they don't sell tubers, and green plants would have to be quarantined. One day, I hope to find it here.
