This is one way of increasing your dahlia plants without having to take cuttings. Wait until the tuber is showing signs of growth. You will need a very sharp knife to split the tuber into two or more pieces. Each piece must have at least one tuber and a eye. Here after splitting you now have to plants.

As an alternative to Sulphur Dust you could use any rooting hormone powder, as that used when taking cuttings, as this should have a fungicide and will encourage rooting. Paul

I never thought of that Paul, maybe its because i do not use it for my cuttings, so i did not have a clue what it contained besides hormones to help with rooting.

You are very welcome Tel. I have always used the powdered rooting hormone, mainly Strike and also a few years ago the Doff brand. Strike is handy because the container also has an inbuilt little dibber built in the lid. Having said this, as you may know I am a huge believer in seaweed base feeds (Maxicrop mainly and if funds allow). Last year for the first time I used the Maxicrop liquid rooting hormone called Take Root. I couldnt say if was any better or worse than powder as cuttings success seemed similar on a like for like basis. But I love using Maxicrop because it has a dense consistency and call me mad but it just looks the part when adding it to the watering can. Though I am aware that the likes of Chempak are far cheaper. A cheaper alternative and I am convinced tubers love it is in watering them using diluted chicken manure pellets (Gem, Bowers, B&Q etc). The cuttings material just seems to spring to life, but be warned if you have it in your watering can for several days it stinks the greenhouse LOL! Regards, Paul
