I have some good news. I have seen Tel's dahlias and his dogs. The dogs were nicer really. That made me laugh. You should be buttering him up if you want that cup next year ;D

I learned a valuable lesson yesterday. I should have splayed my canes more when I first put them in. I didn't realise the plants would grow so large.

We really have learned a lot already WF. I had the same and the size of the leaves is staggering.

I also understand why they needed to be planted so far apart. I'm going to cut more canes today and make a second ring around my plants.
Next year should be a little easier now I know what to expect.

So far I'd say yes, all is going to plan. I thought I would go to another show near here and have a look at what the competition is like. This one is on Saturday 10th September. The town is quite a large one but the show is only in its third or fourth year, it will be interesting to see the quality. Is a September show better for dahlias? or is it a bit late?

The show you are going scouting too in Sept, you will need to find out how many dahlia classes there are and do they judge under NDS rules. You may still have enough blooms left to have a entry there, i should think it will be 3 blooms to a vase at that show because a show having 4 to a vase is very unusual.

The new show is still a very small, local show. It wont be NDS rules and there is only one dahlia class of three blooms. I'll take some photographs.
Is the Shepton Mallet you refer to in Somerset?

It is possible to be able to exhibit in later shows from what's called the 2nd flush. That means that flowers that have bloomed early to Mid August, will flower again from a lateral lower down the stem of the one that has just flowered. A bit of careful thinning and restricting of the number of laterals you allow to grow should give you nice blooms. I've done that many a time, so that when we had our big dahlia show in the middle of september, which also had a big chrysanth and vegetables section, i used the same plants for both shows, shrewsbury and this one. Have a look down the stems of your RR, you should see some laterals down there. If you see one about 2 inches long now, that will be the one that flowers mid september.

This is my first time for growing and showing so this year I need it simple and fool proof. I'm going to do my one planned show this year and see how I get on. If I enjoy the experience, next year I will be ready to try something a little more adventurous.

You'll get the 2nd flush without doing anything to your plants, one of the advantages of having them flower early. If you think your plants are big at the moment, wait until the next lot come through. You've got another 20 blooms a plant to come yet
