I started this thread for all of us who are growing our very firsts plants, nurturing our first cuttings and entering our first shows. We need to move a lot slower than the experts with more explanations and less jargon

What sized pot do I plant my last Ruskin Respectable in before sinking it in the ground?
Will I need to keep watering it or should I soak the planting hole first and let the roots follow the water down?

What size pot have you got it in now? for a pot tuber for propagating from next year i plant mine in pots no bigger than 4in. I water the planting hole, then if the weather stays dry i would water the plant in 10-14 days, unless it is showing signs of wilting.

That is down to the individual grower, if you want the main flush of blooms early stop them now, the plant then will produce the side shoots earlier, or you can let the plant flower on the main stem and the side shoots will follow later.

I have looked up pages 44 and 54 and have ascertained that the pots should be 2 feet apart and that I can snap the plants above the 5th pair of leaves. What size should the pots be? I think I have used pots that are too large. When would flowers be ready for showing?

Cherry, I planted my ones to grow flowers for the show straight into the ground, the one I'm planting in a pot is for cuttings for next year.

I was just going to add to my post, but now it is seperate. WF you are showing Ruskin Respectable. Why? Which is the advised variety? How many plants of the one variety would be required for a vase of three stems?

I need to ask you a few questions first Cherry, When is the show you have mentioned? what varieties are we talking about? I need the answers before i or anyone else can reply to your questions.

July 9th is a bit early for dahlias Cherry, if you stop them now you will not have flowers for that show, only thing i can suggest is you do not stop them you let it flower on the main stem so you will need at least 4 or 5 plants to have any chance of 3 matching blooms. To have any chance of having blooms on the day your plants will need to have pea size buds on them around the 9th of june.
