The judge is my main worry This was my entry last year for the sweetpea class, I won It was a mix of annual and perennial sweetpeas, my annuals had finishes so I filled a vase and put it in. My attitude was that it was the taking part which counted and not the winning. You can imagine my surprise when I won. It didn't go down well with the rest of the village ;D We don't have the same judge this year.

WF. Why don't you get Sweetpea to bring you on for sweet peas next year? I would need help from Tel next year if I show.

I was going to cut them tomorrow. I can take my entries up tonight or between 9 and 10 tomorrow. I think tomorrow is safest. I'll cut 4 & 5 now and put them in the wardrobe. First thing in the morning, just as daylight starts, is the best time. Alarm set for 5 am And tomorrow may be your best bet cause if your competitors see your winning blooms tonight they may accidentally knock your vase over after spraying it with bleach

The ones in the garden are looking good.

I had a go but I wasn't completely sure what I was doing. I made a small hole with a skewer just below the leaf joint and then filled the jug with water to just above the hole.
When I cut the flowers before (the ones I cut too short) I cut them just above the leaf joint where the stem was not hollow.

If you can pierce the stem that is below the water level while it is in the water and see if any air bubbles come out.

I have to take my entries to the show between 9 and 10am, the judging starts at 10.30. I always place mine in the vases at the show, its nerve wracking enough just carrying the vase 20yds never mind taking a exhibit set up in the vase by car.

I did it at home and they all moved around on the journey to the show they are a little more spaced than when I started. Now, you are going to love this bit. All the dahlias entries are on the bench and one of the villagers came along and pointed to mine and said "Lovely flowers but they will probably get disqualified because they are not proper dahlias, they are cactus". Apparently someone entered similar flowers a few years ago and they were disqualified. I told you they were an odd bunch and the judges were not proper judges. We will see what happens. Anyway, here are mine followed by the competition There are no rules or standards in our show, the winner will be the one the judge prefers.
