What sized pot do I plant my last Ruskin Respectable in before sinking it in the ground? Will I need to keep watering it or should I soak the planting hole first and let the roots follow the water down? What size pot have you got it in now? for a pot tuber for propagating from next year i plant mine in pots no bigger than 4in. I water the planting hole, then if the weather stays dry i would water the plant in 10-14 days, unless it is showing signs of wilting.

I dug my dahlias up today, they have made some huge tubers. A lesson learned for next year; tie the dahlias up with nylon string. All the twine I used had rotted so the dahlias all grew together. I took three tubers to one of the dahlia growers in the village, he was quite shocked, he didn't believe I was actually going to give him some of my "prize winning" dahlias. He said he would try not to beat me next year ;D. Now this is fun, we need to keep that cup next year Tel.

He does not deserve any, but I do know your reasoning.

One didn't feel like it was enough, three tubers filled the box I had. I also took him a bag of sulphur powder and explained what it was for. I don't think he understood so he might end up with one anyway.

Hi! Got a quick question, when growing dahlias in pots do the pots need to be wide and deep or shallow and wide pots work as well? By deep wide pots I mean I have pots I use for my collection of palms, they are about 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide as well, round. But I have shallow pots about a foot tall and 18 inches wide. Or should I buy smaller pots? And what size would be preferable?

Mind you I'd rather let them run riot since I love it when plants get really big. Are my pots good enough or pots of that size would be just a waste of space?

I set mine up in January, but i take a lot of cuttings when the shoots are about 3 to 4 in tall. The cuttings have to be taken just below the leaf joint. For garden purposes and few cuttings Mid Feb would be ok for setting up the tubers.
