I was out in the morning, but my husband said it started doing it again early on, and it was still flying at the windows all afternoon and evening. Is there anything I can do about it?

That's an idea, or if you don't have blinds or curtains on that window maybe just putting up a piece of cardboard or similar which would block the window for a day or two until the bird gave up or forgot about it?

There aren't any curtains or blinds, and I stuck sheets of newspaper up on the two windows she seemed to favour, but she just moved up higher to the top window then moved to the doors. I can't reach to the top windows as the room is so high.
I tried scaring her away many, many times, but she just won't go. It's driving me crazy!!!! My husband tried to catch her to see if he could take her elsewhere, but couldn't, and anyway, a bird site says she might be nesting nearby. I can't imagine that she is, as all her time is taken up with bashing into the glass.
I thought about making a hawk silhouette - but the sites all say that doesn't work. I still might give it a go, though.

Poor thing she must be exhausting herself, it's strange isn't it that she's actually moving to still get to the clear glass. Maybe she isn't nesting yet & if she gets a mate she'll be too busy & stop doing it.

Well, I did try hawk silhouettes which only put her off for a few minutes, then we put up a shower curtain on the two favoured windows, and that stopped her for about 15 minutes.
Henry pushed the door open, and in she flew! She cowered on the sill and he dashed back to take a look - I was concerned that he might do worse than scare her so my husband went and fetched a box and we managed to get her into it. He drove up the lane about 5 miles and released her.
I think it was the best solution as I read that they can persist in this behaviour for months, and return annually.
Thank goodness she's gone! ;D I was almost tearing my hair out!

Geranium, you have deprived some poor southern Europeans of a meal. You were very kind.
I get quite upset about Europeans killing small wild birds, especially golden orioles which are quite rare here and sound and look very pretty. Why don't the EU stop this killing instead of making silly laws.

I totally agree! By the way - it wasn't exactly altruistic, as the chaffinch was driving me crazy! She hasn't come back, thank goodness.

Spotted a blue tit taking nesting material into the bird box my grandson made me for Christmas. He will be pleased when I tell him ;D

I use the peelable window decals - decorative and can be removed when you want a change of design. They look nice and also prevent birds from injury! Hope this information is useful. Type window cling suncatcher in your web browser to see lots of designs. I make my own
