We have a goldfinch nesting in a bush between us and the neighbours, them and long tailed tits seem to be getting commoner around here

I have four regular goldfinches which come for the niger seed. They are pretty birds, but I don't know where they nest here.

We had a couple of goldfinches investigating the feeders last week but I haven't seen them since, today there is a little coal tit stashing food in the trees & I saw a quick flash of something which could have been a dunnock or maybe a warbler but I didn't get a good enough view of it. Have you still got your wren Sweetpea? I haven't seen ours for about a week, it's either gone elsewhere to mate or one of the cats got it, not seen the robin for ages either. Walking past the local petrol station this morning I looked up & checked the petrol pumps, there is a collared dove which nests in the same place there every year on top of one of the top covers above a pump. They were taken over by a new company recently who fitted new pumps with different tops, today though there is an untidy little bunch of twigs on top on her usual spot! ;D

That story is quite touching Sue. Will the nest be alright on a different style pump?

I like collared doves.

I like collared doves too Sweetpea, they're a bit dopey though aren't they! Cherry I think the new pump has more room on it but there is a little pipe/wire sticking out that wasn't there on the old one so she has had to adapt her nest building. I passed again today & could see the twigs still but no bird. I think even though it's changed hands some of the staff are the same & they must see her, when the old pump was there they had everywhere painted but worked around her!

saw the wren today Sue, flitting about in the bushes. Wonder where they have set up home. Not too far away I should think. It was flitting around apparently unconcerned by my presence a couple of yards away.

Just saw one of the collared doves hobnobbing with a bunch of feral pigeons. hadn't seen any for a little while. Also a blu tit in the g'house with the panes missing. After one bump into a glass pane it flew out a gap.

Goldfinches are the new sparrows around here. There is a 20+ charm that roosts in the local supermarket car park. Great tits are in nest box on front of house (out of cats way!!)

They must be starting to move into gardens in our area Derek as we've had the odd one or two over the last few years. Found the remains of a little pale blue egg by the back door this morning, not sure if it's from a hatchling or it's been predated by something, the female blackbird seems to be building another nest, she's had a few goes in various places in the garden already.

The swifts are back - I spotted one yesterday. I shall have to keep the log shed door closed as they like nesting in there...and the mess is awful.
