What a shame SueA. There are empty eggshells all over the farm. They must get stolen and flown away. I still get a little upset when I see them.

It's a really dainty little thing, I've seen it a few times recently eating with the family of house sparrows. We've also got a tatty, dopey looking young magpie visiting who sits on the fence listening to me & waiting for the food to be put out.

they are sweet little things, I have seen them here rooting around quietly most of the birds here have gone very quiet apart from a resident blackbird and a couple of chaffinches, I guess they will be back soon

Lovely picture of the Dunnock SueA, we have lots of them around here, but sadly no sparrows.

Most of our birds seem to be hiding away moulting too grindle. It's the other way around here peony, only ever see the odd dunnock but we have little gangs of sparrows, we had a 'dad' with what looked about 7 of his babies in the garden the other morning.

Surely the Dunnock is a member of the sparrow family?

Some people call dunnocks 'hedge sparrows' Dai but they're not related to tree or house sparrows at all, they're a much daintier little bird with a fine beak.

Sadly found a dead young ( hadn't got it's 'collar' yet) collared dove on the lawn tonight, no idea what had killed it, little bit of blood around it's neck & it didn't look like it had been mauled by a cat, maybe whatever killed it got disturbed & left it.

what a shame, could it have been a sparrowhawk? We do have sparrowhawks so it could have been, I remember hearing gulls around the time it must it have happened too, we have them, crows & even had a couple of buzzards circling overhead when I was in the garden so I thought maybe it was caught by something which was then mobbed by some of the other birds & dropped it.
