My kitchen window overlooks the front garden where there are two very old damson trees with ivy growing up the trunks and this morning I watched a Jay hopping along each branch looking in the ivy. I was wondering what it was doing when it put its head in the ivy and came out with a large acorn ;D

Okay Steve, whatever you say I've just been out to fill up the seed feeders and noticed one of the blackbirds on the ground under the shrubs - they seem to be quite unafraid this year, this isn't the first time that a female blackbird has hopped around me, literally Is anyone noticing the same with them ? I saw a biiig fat worm pushing its way into the ground so hoiked it out and flicked it towards her and she immediately started pecking at it ;D By the time i'd finished with the feeders she was still going at it. I thought they'd 'down it in one' I saw a female down a large red grape yesterday so their little throats must be big enough for a worm. It was fat though

That was to the last message previous page Louise, I should have quoted instead of replied ;D
Note: the shelled sunflower hearts available for birds do say not for human consumption on them? the ones I buy are half kilo bags from Holland and barrets, they are cheaper online but the postage then kicks in

When i fill up the seed feeders each morning there are often 2 goldfinches that sit in the top of the tree and watch me, they aren't as nervous as the rest - which is a bit worrying really because you don't want wild birds becoming too friendly with humans. They tweet to their friends at the same time and as i try and watch them it's difficult to balance on the ladder, i could have lost my balance this morning because i was too busy looking up

I have been visiting a friend just four miles from me, but on a terrible fen country road. I noticed that the birds feeding at her bird table are completely different to the ones which feed here. I was just amazed at that. There were myriads of sparrows, where I have about two or three, goldfinch and other small birds. My most common bird is the ordinary tit with a black head and striped underbelly. There were none of these at my friend's table or hanging feeders.
