We know dahlias like a lot of water Steve, but they do not like to be stood in sodden soil, it only takes a few days for them to rot off at the roots, mine are not performing too well this year either. Like yourself may get some water lilies next year and see if there is a class for them in a show somewhere. ;D

There is one small positive though, whatever manages to produce, will be next years stock, Its looking like 2 varieties are standing up, no, willting less than the others! Noreen & Josie Gott and the Kafkas infront of the house where they are raised about a foot. So some varieties must be more tolerant??? Hosepipe ban- I have used my 5 water butts as storm tanks since june2011!!(green house & dog kennel roof).

I seem to be bucking the trend a bit as my plants are growing away nicely. Here's the front today. and here are my Sir Alf out the back Chose Sir Alf as that is showing a lot of buds that look as if they will be quite close to flowering bang on time for Shrewsbury. Biggest problem for me is getting them tied in properly. They've all got 4 laterals growing. I will reduce to 3 when the buds are secured.

Scrumpy, that must look absolutely amazing when your dahlia's are in flower...would post a picture when they do flower, i would love to see it In theory, Wednesday August 8th at 8.30 pm will be the best picture of them all, so will take one or two then for you. It's the one day of the year I look forward to the most. Just as the sun goes down.....if we ever get any sun to go down...the light is just right to get the colours in all their glory and they look their best. On here are some from previous years...just click on the next button s938.photobucket.com/albums/ad225/oldshobdonion/dahlia%20blooms/dahlias%202010/?action=view¤t=050810060804.jpg#!oZZ1QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs938.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fad225%2Foldshobdonion%2Fdahlia%2520blooms%2Fdahlias%25202010%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3Dmedcactusentry.jpg

Thats pretty unbelievable scrumpy.I have some movement now but its gonna be 2 weeks yet before anything is ready to be debranched apart from some early plants of janal amy I got given and they will get done this weekend. It is very strange, because I'm trying to get my Moonlight sport ready for the national and I've set 5 plants by that I managed to get cuttings from that rooted mid May, and I planted out mid June in 30 litre polypots. At the same time, I planted some Pim's Moonlight as I need the parent to go with them. The sport was stopped 1st July because the crown bud was showing and now, some of the top laterals are showing buds. So it looks like I've a lot of work to do to hold them back, as I wasn't expecting growth to be so fast, especially from such late cuttings. I've not watered them once all season, not fertilised, yet they look better than the ones in the garden!! As for the Pim's, that one will be even more difficult as it is ready now for flowering

Well the sun is out and I've made a start on the disbudding. I would say that my plants, on close inspection, even though they look nice and healthy, are about a week behind. I won't have the selection to pick and choose this year, it'll be more hit and hope. Rather than the show being at it's earliest ever, could have done with the extra 3 or 4 days. Still, beggars can't be choosers. Found lots of baby earwigs too And loads of blackfly courtesy of the ants. Been too wet to spray. Picked the wrong year not to use Intercept before planting out I think.

Well after a drier couple of days I have managed to get a feed into my dahlias and I am a feeling a little better about them than I was. They are starting to grow away now and I will be looking to start debranching next weekend. The only thing I am still worried about is the ones I have double stopped but we will have to just wait and see what happens.
