That'll keep you out of mischief for a few days then!
I want mine in next weekend. I was aiming for this weekend, but there is a 3 degree night forecast in the coming week, and 3C on the forecast is sometimes a frost in real life, so I am waiting. The poms are in, and I never dug the NoID bed, so that's about two dozen plants which already have their roots in the dirt.
It is supposed to rain all day tomorrow, but I hope to sort the Dahlias into planting groups anyway. They have got all mixed up by moving them out into the sun, then back under shelter when frost warnings came. A lot of these Dahlia migration events have happened in the dark when the frost warning came, so you can imagine the resultant chaos.
I have pinched perhaps a third of the plants out already. Others are not that far on, or I am still hoping they will shoot.

Is it OK to dig them up before the first frosts? I am in Cornwall and the weather is still very mild, plus there is a change I might be able to show some blooms at a show first weekend in November.
Whats the best procedure, cut them down, leave for a week and then dig up?

If the weather is forecast mild snute leave them in as long as you can,the longer in the ground the less chance they will have to rot when lifted.I am starting to get mine up earlier this year because I have that many (450) in and I am going away first weekend in november.I go through and cut them all down first and then dig them up.

Frost forecast for the weekend and cold during the day. I will get mine up before the weekend and get the tubers stored in the heated greenhouse at home.

You do not need any frost at the start of your season, to much to lose. Our season is well over now, some will have lifted there tubers and others will be after this cold spell this weekend.
Brought the majority of mine home today from the allotment, the rest will will be brought home tomorrow, then there is 3 in the garden to dig out.
Then we start all over again next year. ;D

Do you store as whole crowns, or as divided tubers, Tel?

Do you store as whole crowns, or as divided tubers, Tel? Moorplace Pom is stored as a full ground tuber, then replanted at the beginning of May. There is a few that have just been grown in 3in pots for stock this year, then i have the majority that were planted in their 3in pots into the ground along side the one's that were taken out of the pots and planted, i keep very few of those, i either compost them or give them away.

Lots of weeding and digging today. Dahlias are still mostly in pots while I get out tree roots, dock and couch grass where they need to go. I found another self-sown Dahlia seedling while weeding a bed where I let some overwinter in soil. I think I have found six there now. I will let them flower and see what they are. There was a plant in that bed which had a lot of open centred blooms, although it shouldn't have, so they probably belong to it. It was DD Frosted Lace - see www.flickr.com/photos/mary_on_flickr/6801620044/in/photostream .
