Tel if you were going to a show and there was a class that effectively had your Garden's Friend's 'name on it' (expression round here, not meant that there was a dedicated class for entries called Birkenshaw Garden Friends) would you want to show it?
At our local dahlia show there is are 2 classes for seedlings. 1 for dahlia's suitable for exhibition and 1 for dahlias suitable for the garden.
Are the Leeds trials exclusively for exhibition dahlias? Garden Friends, is more of a garden dahlia than a show variety. The Leeds Trials are for potential show varieties. I have my fingers crossed that Birkenshaw Pudsey, finishes in the top ten at the trials. Will be taking the plants to Golden Acre Park Monday morning. Good Luck with Birkenshaw Pudsey Tel, it is very exciting. I think Cherry is right.
So Tel have you any plans for the next step with your Garden Friends?

The most entries for the dahlia trials, were Miniature Decorative's sent by the raiser of the Blyton varieties. Not many entries for the Small Decorative's only two I think including my entry. I saw one entry for a star dahlia, one entry for large poms, no small poms this year, that I could see. Mediums, a couple of semi cactus, about 4 Medium Decorative's. This year there are some fibrillated dahlia's entered, that is unusual to see those entered in the trials. The most interesting entry for me in the trial's is a Small Cactus, White Kiwi.

The closing date for entries to this year's dahlia trials, were extended because of lack of entries. Next year if the situation is the same I am thinking of sending this one as a space filler for them. When I can think of a name for it.

So do I Lou, there is only one plant of it, because the label went missing so no cuttings from it this year. Because I did not know what it was, i planted in the front garden.

I think I am going to regret sending Birkenshaw Pudsey to the trials. The two plants I have in the garden, the flowering stems from the top pair of leaves to the opening flowering bud, are only 6in long should be around 15in. Now I could nip out the top pair of leaves to make the stem longer ,but this would leave a scar on the stem. At this moment in time I think it would be a waste of time to enter it for Harrogate.I had the same problem with a variety called Charlie Two this one a lot of the blooms were on short stems and did not come clear of the foliage. I could nip out the top leaves for local shows if the same happens with the 30 plants on the allotment.

If Birkenshaw Pudsey is a good dahlia and does well when you show it - People will be interested. Might be a frustratingly longer path to recognition of your variety but if any seedling is a good variety if you give it long enough and show it with success, it will take off. If you are not happy with it this year, focus on what you need to do to make it better, next season.

That was the only pic I took of it last year. Plants on the allotment, the buds are not showing colour yet, blooms are wanted on them for Harrogate next month. I have a plant in the garden that has 3 blooms on it but will be a few days yet before they are at their peak. Will take and post pics of them then. The bloom was a small.

Ah....so you are showing at Harrogate this year Tel. ? My main aim is depending on what Birkenshaw Pudsey does, is to enter it in the seedling class, I thought it would be 5 blooms for small decs, but the seedling class is 3 blooms.
