Dahlia seeds need to be placed correctly while sowing. In other words the convex side of the seed should remain upward on the seed bed. Otherwise the growing root in stead of going downward will come to the surface of the seed compost. In most cases, however, the root projecting upwards loses energy for further growth, consequently destined to perish unnoticed even on sprouting. A correctly sown seed sprouts a good seedling early. One will be surprised to see the results the seeds from the same packet are sown in two seed trays. In the first seed tray ( C) the rate of sprouting is high, seedlings are healthy and the sprouting is early. Unfortunatleyin the second ( D) the rate of sprouting is low, the most of the seedlings are unhealthy and crippled. Moreover the sprouting is delayed.

Do you grow many from seed, Tel? It depends on the number of seeds the dahlias have produced that are viable. I have some seeds to sow in March, but i have not counted them. I have only kept one seedling, The one that longs suggested a name for Terrycotta this will be its 3rd season.

How long would a seedling take to be a flowering plant? I have had some in flower at the end of July, majority in August and a few late ones in Sept.

Any other tips? My Dahlia Dwarf seeds arrived with me today . Sow them in seed trays or pots about 1.5in apart, i would suggest not to sow them before the 3rd week of March if you can keep them frost free until planting out after the frosts have finished. Sow them about a quarter of an inch deep in seed compost, i then water from below until you can see the top of the compost is damp. Some growers cover the seed tray with a piece of glass, with a sheet of newspaper on top until they start to germinate, at a temperature of 68-70 degrees. I just cover mine with a piece of clingfilm just to stop the compost drying out, remove when you see them start to come through the compost. Then you are supposed to prick out into small pots, (i use 3in pots) when they have their first true pair of leaves, but i have had no problems pricking out, when they have just the 2 seedling leaves.

Sowed some 'dahlia coltness mix' which came free with GN last year and must say they were absolutely fab. Still have most of that packet left and going to grow as many as I can this year. Thanks for the tip Tel, it doesn't mention this on the packet so I must have been lucky, rub of the green and all that
