Very true Ian. I love to win myself when I won the national school wind orchestra championships in my teens I could not stop smiling for days. I do miss that. Maybe next year I will experience that feeling again with dahlia growing. Only as a novice grower but got to start somewhere Maybe you could bring you're wind instrument to the AGM next year, Raymond, and keep everybody entertained

Hi Raymond Staleen Condesa is very easy to grow light purple. I had 2 vases of five and a vase of five dikara moon (med dec) in a 3vase class at a local Horticultural show the first week in september and single vases through out the season.

Good afternoon robh, i am sorry to hear that but if I could not show my dahlias I would not grow them any more. That is how passionate I am about growing the beloved DAHLIA.

I think this discussion is very interesting but I don't think that you can compare how you feel about dahlias or anything really. For example people who grow vegetables don't necessarily want to show them but they might take a pride or satisfaction in their allotments. I've heard it said a few times by different posters, who have said that they can grow better than those in the show only to be told, well do it then. Lots of horticultural shows have classes for the biggest pumpkin etc. Some people might want to show theirs but other people might like the pride of seeing their giant and revel in the pride and satisfaction when other people comment on it.
I grew up with dahlias. My Father, grew, exhibited and judged at National level. He raised varieties and sold them. I have very happy memories but I'm not going to bore you all. The thing is, when my Father stopped. It was awful, it was from my perspective like something had died. I think that Dad started to grow dahlias again when my sister planted regular garden dahlias I think that made the dahlia champion in him give in, if you are going to grow a dahlia, you have to grow a good one and if you are going to grow them, it's worth going to the shows to look at what other people are growing and if you are going to go you might as well take your own blooms... Then if you are going to grow dahlias... why not raise a few seedlings? Seeing him grow again, it's like he's alive again. He is very competitive but he talks about stopping exhibiting but not his seedlings.
I think if given a choice, between exhibiting or my seedlings, however rubbish they may well be, the seedlings are my biggest passion.

When I say Champion, I don't mean someone who has won lots of cups and trophys I mean Champion as in 2nd definition here. It's late, I've got work tomorrow ought to be off to the land of nod.
