We get a real feel for the show from these pics. The dahlias are really lovely. New jumper Tel?

dahliadave I would love to visit your fields at some point in the future. The varieties in the pictures in the bottom can I ask what they are ? Sorry to ask but so many different dahlias and for a newbie gets so confusing. Great pictures . Hi Raymond, left to right and top to bottom they are:- Kilburn Fiesta (medium semi cactus). Hamari Gold (GD), Vassio Meggos (Large Dec), Kenora Sunset (medium Semi Cactus), Ruskin Tangerine- (later flowering than some and this flower is buried a bit in the foliage Dual classification Small/Min Ball), Rossendale Flamenco (Small Dec- included in our trial beds and more of a garden/cutflower variety) and Richard S (Large cactus). It is a bit confusing and I must confess to being a bit uncertain about some myself. especially when photos you see of them have been taken by someone else (as in this case) or when they have been grown in differing conditions and environments. Anyone is welcome to visit. It surprises me how far some people travel just to have a look and we take it as a great compliment. Someone flew in from Co Antrim over the weekend just to spend a day and a half looking round the fields while someone else last week drove from Southampton to Heathrow, got the plane from Heathrow to Newcastle, a night in a BandB before visiting us in the morning and having a good look round before flying back the same night.

dahliadave my sincere thanks for the info. The fields look wonderful and I hope next year to visit and look at many wonderfully grown dahlias. Kenora sunset is on my list as are many others. I am sure you will be getting an order from me in November December still planning my layout. I have your advance catalogue from Kent annual show which I am now a member of. It was a great day. Also congratulations as others said on raising so much money Best regards

No problem Raymond and thank you. we had a great day and it opened peoples eyes to Dahlias- someone was overheard to say " this is what paradise must be like!" Just be wary when choosing and work out what you are growing for. Kenora Sunset is a cracking variety for the garden but can be very branchy with the flowers buried in the foliage as the basal growth is so vigorous. If you were showing it would normally only be used in a bi-colour class unless at a smaller, local show though others may disagree.

Sorry you could not make it Lou. We had a brilliant day! Hope your husband is feeling better soon. We had over 500 visitors but most importantly raised well over £1000 for the National Gardens Scheme. Not too many cakes left either out of the 30 baked. We had visitors from Co.An trim, Perth, Dunbar, Cumbria, Staffordshire and lots of exhibitors from the North East and Yorkshire. We had to do a lot of dead heading this morning with the help of some local NDS members. Still a lot of colour to come if the weather holds. Glad to see you had a good show DC, especially after all the miserable weather. The Northumberland and Durham show was apparently pretty good yesterday with some good entries-shsme I did not get. Sounds like your Ryecroft Zoe sport did well Scrumpy. That is a lot of money you managed to raise David, hope you enjoyed the day, plus a few new customers. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day Tel. It was hard work and I was almost banned from the kitchen for 2 days but it was worth it. So many positive comments and so many questions throughout the day on the walk and talk sessions. The most common question was "How should we store tubers". Some couldn't quite grasp the fact that our Dahlias aren't permanent beds and that we lift all 6000+ by hand and replant each year.

dahliadave I am going to post my shortlist on here before I decide and see what the experts think. Kenora sunset is one of the wow factor dahlias I wish to try in my front garden. My main bed in the back with be my competition ones so far shorlisted. Ryecroft zoe Hillcrest or vals candy Winholm Diane Mary's Jomanda Tarahati ruby or edwins sunset Cherwell goldcrest or oakwod goldcrest Birkenshaw garden friends One of the westons. Ryecroft pixie mainly due to height I would like to try a moonlight but heard they don't do so well far south. Everything still up in the air and has to be edited back as I want 5 to 8 plants of the comp ones. Only going for 5 or so classifications max with no giants. If you have any recommendations for a novice I would love your ideas. It will be 35 plants in back garden bottom border area. Another 20 plants in front garden and some misc ones in top back border. Total 60 to 65 with some pots and how much lawn goes

Lovely photos dahliadave Are there any photos of the Tom McClelland seedling in the field? If you do have any I would love to see it. Saw a photo of it ages ago and have been hopeful ever since.
(Link to past post)
Presuming you are asking about the seedling named "Tom McClelland". We have had it for a couple of years and have been building up some stock. We struggled a bit at first but the plants we have now under glass are a 5ft and looking really good. Need to carefully assess where we are with quantities and have a few conversations to see where we go next with regards to listing it. In the same greenhouse we have a Bonaventure growing. We weren't too happy with our stock a season or two ago so managed to get a good tuber form Tom Bebbington who had a very good bloom in at Harrogate a couple of years ago. Thought you might like to see how the tuber is doing. This is the original tuber growing under glass after 2 years of taking cuttings from it! It is a bit of a triffid as I have only got my arms half way around it and it is standing a good 8ft high! Thank you for showing that photo dahliadave when you mentioned that you had it growing on your facebook I got rather excited. It was the 1st thing I looked for on this years listing but it is worth waiting for if it looks as good as it did then. Thank you

After a few years of disappointment, you must be feeling quite good this year Tel......and rightly so...... Any plans for next year you can share with us?.... Will sit down and take a few things into consideration Lou, once the season is over. The two main things I will have to think about is, downsizing from two allotments to one, then the age factor comes into it.

Great results for you. When are you releasing Garden Friends I need to find someone to take it on for me, to propagate and sell it. It would help if it does reasonable well in the trials, for any advert, plus it is a Harrogate winner, that should help too.

Will sit down and take a few things into consideration Lou, once the season is over. The two main things I will have to think about is, downsizing from two allotments to one, then the age factor comes into it. There is a third option. I may be taking on a sort of "apprentice" next year. One of my wifes friends son is interested in growing and showing dahlias. I've said he can have some of my stock, and will help him as much as I can. So maybe you could advertise for a helper? We need a next generation of growers.
