I only cut back, not down completely. I leave up to two feet on the plant and feed the tuber so the plant puts all it's energy into plumping up the tuber, ready for winter in storage. I'll dig the tubers up around the beginning of November, as my ground is clay based, and leaving the tubers to long in wet ground encourages rotting. I sacrifice late colour for plumper tubers for better storage, plus the fact, where I live in the south, Last winter we didn't have any frost till the end of January. For me it works, I don't lose tubers over wintering, and healthy tuber gives better cuttings. Thanks for that Mark....I though you meant you were lifting them.......

No chance of that Lou, that's another job I don't like doing for obvious reasons . All looking very forlorn today, so I've been having a look at some of the photo's I took during the season, and at Wisley and Harrogate, to cheer me up .

Have any of you seen hillcrest Jersie ? A new release. Had it recommended but can't find a picture Here it is. free image uploadingThanks for this ! What do you think Tel looks a beauty to me. Very full deep bloom. Good petals and shape although I think the front bloom looks a touch clock faced and lop sided. I think this hillcrest and ryecroft zoe would make a rather stunning exhibit. I am also thinking about cherwell lapwing or lavender line purely as I like the colour. I also love the new ryecroft called Helen yellow med semi cactus. Check the Essex dahlia site for a pic. Thanks again for that. Off to Kent tomorrow for a lecture on growing from Andrew aspital should be informative. Last thing do you know anyone that has grow any of the scaurs ? Dc doesnt I like the look of a couple of small decs one called vale.

Raymond, Well don't know where you are looking to say the front bloom is clock faced it is the same as the other two. Anyway if you are still interested in Hillcrest Jersie then have a look at www.dahlia4u.co.uk this will show you Les Jackson new releases and an email address for Les. Jersie is a welcome addition to the section and worth growing. All the very best Ian

Gosh that seems like a lot of money but if it is a brand new release then if it is a brand new release then I guess it isn't that surprising but certainly out of my pay range. How do you think it compares with Ruskin Myra and Ryecroft Zoe ian?

The angle of the front bloom is tad and I mean just a tad not matching the other 2 and the right side of it just a tad fuller than the left. Other blooms look perfect. It is a beautiful set though. I hope it's not one of your exhibits ! Oops It is a great full stunning dahlia. I will have a look at the link as I want it. I will order it from les if still available. Sincere thanks Raymond

Hi Moonlight there will be plants available at £2-50 - £3-00 per plant now that is much les than others are charging. Now if you want to grow 10 or more plants then then a tuber of the seedling is good value for money and once you have taken your cuttings you can split the tuber & grow that also or pass it on to an other to take more cuttings but not to over propagate as this can result in weakening of the stock. For a new variety £18 inc of postage is good value as it is a new variety and is probably in its 4th year for the raiser and he wants some return. He will never make a fortune and likewise you buy a new variety from Halls at £4-50 per plant you might say how much but again David has a lot of overheads and he is charging a realistic price. If you have tried to produce cuttings over winter and early season you will realize how much it costs.
How will it compare with Zoe & Myra are both semi cactus and Hillcrest Jersie is a straight Cactus so should have a finer petal form and if cultivated correctly will compete with the beat in the section and semi cactus section. Some judges cannot see further than the Kiwis but there are a few varieties that can hold their own against the Kiwis if cultivated correctly. Ian

Hi ian I have emailed les it is still available so am ordering the tubor 2 of them. I am also ordering the root t grow lights heat mats etc... Jersie will be my main show variety along with zoe, winholm Diane and Mary's Jomanda. Will add some miniatures to this as well pirate and a min Dec. May try a pom. The rest in threes to try in garden display at front and see what I am capable of growing and playing with disbudding etc... Mostly small, med and one large. Jersie looks a really lovely dahlia hope I can grow it well along with the others. Was looking at Duncan Edwards for my only large . Does anyone grow it ?

Raymond, the pic is from the NDS site, but it did not copy very well. It's fine Tel just delighted to have seen it a lovely looking small cactus. Apologies to who I criticised on the growing or staging ! I can only dream of growing dahlias to that standard.

We had some Duncan Edwards in last year and wasn't a great fan. To get large it had to be grown three up and undercover we got a few blooms with white marking's. Its definitely a multi vase variety. Kenora Challenger, trooper Dan or good stock of Reg Keane are good larges. Jersie would do well up hear in Scotland as Frankie is one of the only ones that is able to grow a decent small cactus.
