There are many shows going on whether National or local the grass roots are the local shows without these we will lose the National shows because this is where most exhibitors cut their teeth. Anyway if you want a really good show with excellent prize money and other prizes eg. A garden bench, a massive joint of meat and other specials meals for two etc then the 7th September Sunday at Chipping in Lancashire is the place to be. Have a look on their web site www.chippingflowershow.co.uk or info@chippingflowershow.co.uk. There is a vegetable section, Dahlia section, Gladiolus, chrysanthemum, pot & mixed flower sections, it is one of the best shows I have been to, please take note the standard is very very high with many National champions competing. & For such a small place it is fantastic, oh and plenty of tea, coffee, bacon & sausage butties during staging. See you there.

I'll second what Ian is saying. Its a fantastic, friendly show, in a nice part of the country to boot Its well worth a trip out even if you are not exhibiting, the first time I went I never bothered to measure the poms I had, thinking it was just a village show..............wrong. I've heard it called little Harrogate. I will be there........unless I get lost

Up in Scotland one of my first shows is a great show held at Ridgeview Nursery on there open day. The classes are very well contested as many of the top growers are present. The best thing is they do some mean baking . Good luck with your shows big or small.

We used to have a little village show at a place called Hanwood. Bit like yours above, classes for best sponge, best cup of tea, best photo of an alien spaceship, and oh yes, 15 classes of dahlias Just so happened that one of the 12 residents of the village just happened to be a dahlia judge!! Growers from all over the place used to exhibit there. Sadly, when he moved on, so did the show.

This probably sounds silly but I belong to our local town horticultural society, use their shop and have a go at their shows (and did well especially considering my 1st year, but I've made myself ineligible to enter this years 3 show Novice cup because I won in Dahlia classes last year.)
But I actually live slightly nearer to another towns horticultural society (1.9 miles away as opposed to 2.6 miles away if you measure from both town's horticultural shop) but I've not joined it because it's not the actual town that I live in, if that makes sense. They have shows including dahlia classes and I have thought about joining as it is so close (+ their shop has later opening hours) but then I feel a bit of a traitor to my town's society and a bit of a fraud for wanting to join the nearer society as well because I don't actually live in their town. I've thought about joining both not either or and entering both shows.
At our local show we have competitors who exhibit at National level that are not local but for smaller town shows, would it be frowned upon to exhibit at both, when I'm not a local local, if that makes sense?

80% 0f the local shows I exhibit at, I am not a member off. the majority of classes are open to non members, all societies with open classes would be pleased to see exhibitors from anywhere, attend their shows.

Thanks Tel, mind you make it sound as though you do 100s of shows when you say 80% of local shows you exhibit at. I think I'm pushing it by doing 3 while my poor husband thinks that I'm pushing it doing 1. He loathes me and my shows but I love it, it's what I grew up with.

Local village show and maybe the Welsh Dahlia Society Show will probably be the only two dahlia shows for me. I may reconsider if I have enough veg/chrysanths to do one or two other shows - providing I can get time off work as they are on Wednesdays or Sundays.
As for showing at other shows, as long as the show is an 'open' show then I would enter what I could. Shows need as many exhibits as possible to give the visitors something to see, nothing worse in my eyes than empty staging.

Yes markb. It is good to support as many shows as you can, especially locally.

Is anybody going or showing at the National, and if so, what days would be the best to attend?
