I am having a discussion with my daughter who described my seedling as Maroon because she said it was a Red and Brown.
Is there an official colour chart which includes examples of the colours on real dahlia examples. Rather than a paint chart where you don't know what it really looks like? Would appreciate some clarification on how to identify the correct colour. Thank You

There is the RHS colour chart, which covers all things fruit and flower.
There are four books, like a pantone book would be, for printing inks, but it is VERY VERY expensive. I used to use it to make yoghurt fruit mixes, as they had to have a specific colour tolerance for when mixed into yoghurt. It was all very high tech

They have letter and number codes, rather than named colours, though.

I can see where Pirate "is coming from". I can see brown tones in that bloom. Most of us see colours in different ways, I know of people in the paper industry who were "trained" to colour match; of course you have to have a "natural" eye for colour in the first place. Of course the camera sees colours in a certain way; this is distorted during downloading and then the human eye......its a difficult one eh!

Thanks dianthus you have been a big help. Couldn't believe the price of the current RHS one.

I did warn you that they were expensive.
It is the definitive colour guide, though, and printing it must be a nightmare, to make up the pantone colour blends. It is amazing to look through it, all the same.

p.s. My book arrived and it is very good. Even mentions the difference between a ball dahlia and a dec... Anyway, moving on...
Daughter no. 1 can't get her head around the concept that you can have a 'bronze' coloured dahlia.

Great photo Ste, I can take the neck brace off now. Just imagine if you had 3 or 5 blooms like that, placed them in a show when the judge walked down to have a look at your vase
