Hi guys, I remember reading a lot of negative comments around Hillcrest Jersie last year, but i've been tempted to try it for next season. Can anyone remember what the negative comments about it were or has anyone on here got any experience of growing it ? also does the variety stand up to be grown without covers ?
Best Regards
Gareth

Hi gareth, I know Raymond has grown Hillcrest Jersie & had some success with them at shows this year & dahliaholic has said he's grown them so perhaps one of them will look in & give you some info.

Gareth,Yes it can be grown without covers and the only negative was the raiser and the tubers did not throw many cuttings. but the variety is OK not the best but it will give you a reasonable vase for the bench.
Personally I wouldn't grow it but that's nothing to do with this variety.

that is because the raiser is a D--k and because of what he did, a real wonker.
But as I say the variety is ok but not the best.........fact.
And JD I thought you were a friend

Ok so I am bored. I can't really plan for next year yet because I don't know what Che and I have managed to over winter but I would like to ask - are there any particular dahlias for exhibition that you guys n gals like and would recommend for us to look into stock for 2017. I personally loved Barbarry Vulcan this year thanks to champion Sutherland ian was kind enough to provide Che with stock and they were excellent. I also liked kiwi Gloria a more regular bench visitor who performed well and withstood rain fairly well. So any top stock to recommend?

For me Cat, it has to be Blyton Everest. Only had eight plants of it, and I don't think I wasted a bloom. Didn't take a lot of attention, just a couple of feeds and a bit of disbudding. Used it in every show I did, and red cards in all but the Midlands, where it got a second. A classic small decorative, with a stable flush, not all over the place like similar blooms with flush centres, making it easy to match. Will have some spare plants come April/May, if you have space.
And yes, it is a boring time, now the tubers are stored, waiting for the hot beds to go on. Still, I've got my new plot to get ready, new polytunnel frame up, and before you know it, bang, it all starts again.

Thanks for that johndoe . We don't have heat benches so we have to wait until at least march before we try and strike cuttings. It is quite hard to read posts in january and february of other people getting their set ups underway but there we go. Our dahlias are the bottom of our finance list and we manage the best we can, and enjoy it all.

Sorry not been on for a while been full on with new job. gareth I like jersie but it is erratic. In terms of a plant. I grew four of it to trail two great, 1 iffy and 1 rubbish. It did throw plenty of cuttings for me . It is fairly early flowering. If you grow it grow it like a kiwi. Plenty of water and not much feed. Single stop 8 or 9up wings and two pairs. Not a tall grower about 3 feet max. It is better as a younger bloom as it matures the petal can hockey stick. Less feed sorts this to some extent. I will grow 10 of it next year . Not growing a kiwi it is to hot down here to get the form and depth to a northern kiwi. Saying that I won the novice small cactus at wisley this year using 1 Jersie and 2 Gloria. If you decide to grow it only grow 4 plants and trial it. Jersie will not be a banker for me zoe and Greenways zoe and cherwell goldcrest I hope will be my bankers. Those all semi cactus but useful to have a small cactus .

I got my Garden News today....and was thrilled to read Dave Gillam's column on his top dahlias for 2016.... He listed Tel's Birkenshaw Garden Friends as one of them, but the mag spelled it wrong!...grr...
David Hall (Halls of Heddon) got a mention too with his Hadrian's Midnight....tis a collarette and is a gorgeous dark red, with twisted petals. I saw it growing at the nursery last year....am definitely getting it for 2017 !... Nice one Dave!
