Blimey Lou78W you must have had skinny fish, or I had fat ones, mine used to get fed once or twice a day! I did have a tank full of tropicals though but I suppose it depends on exactly how much food you put in each time as well as the number of fish, I worked on 'little & often'.

I used to do that as well SueA . It takes a while to get used to how much food to give them. We used to feed just a couple of times a week and as there are only 2 fish( ?) once a week should be more than enough....I am sure that when I had fish a long time ago I didn't feed them daily. We did a full water test today. It was like watching a Chemistry lesson. Also bought some more pond weed but annoyed to find it didn't have any root at the end. Hay hoe. We will eventually sort the tank out.

Hi Moonlight I have been meaning to say where is the bubble wrap insulation on your greenhouse, I thought you would have that in place. My tubers are all set up with frost free setting on the heater and as usual my fleece tent. If I were you I would leave the duvets on the tubers or if you need them for the bed hehe then a fleece covering is good for a few degrees. I have left space on my bench if and when I receive testers from friends. Good luck for the season Moonlight I don't have any bubble wrap. I have only used fleece, towels and duvets. Haven't used anything until I really needed to. My tubers get some insulation from the soil that I don't wash off. Mine are never 100% naked. I don't have any form of 'heating' heating. Although I do love the smell of a paraffin burner.

Re HH's marvelous sheltering of your tubers with the duvets. A thought occured to me. They wheren't YOUR duvets where they ? (e.g. the actual ones on your bed ? ) No of course they weren't my duvets! The girls were more than happy to offer up theirs. After all it is only winter! We bring 'em up 'ard down South contrary to popular misconception.

Just had a thought Moonlight, did you get a gravel vacuum for the fish tank, they only cost a few pounds usually & you can clean the rubbish off the gravel without having to empty much water out, I had a battery operated one or you can get just hand operated. I had an under gravel filter too which kept the tank fairly clean.

I had an under gravel filter too which kept the tank fairly clean. It's amazing how expensive this is becoming. It all adds up. actually I don't want it to add it up. We bought a siphon tube but haven't used it yet. We all agree that our fish are both boys. If we get anymore it will need to be 2 females but we won't be getting anymore anytime soon as we need to get the water balance better. Which reminds me, really ought to get some water ready in a bucket, with tap safe in it, so that when we do do a water change that the water is balanced before it goes in. Maybe I will get a chance to make the plants look nice. At the moment it looks like they have been dumped in the water with 'furniture' plonked onto of it, just to hold it down. Which is true but I wanted to get it in whilst keeping stress to the fish to a minimum.

Tank water testing Results as of 16.1.16 ph 8 Ammonia NH3 .5 (ok) Nitrite NO2N 1 (!) Nitrate NO3N 20 Alkalinity KH 10 General Hardness GH 18
I'll put a key up another time. I was pleased with Fairy today as she spent time researching with Aunty Internet about how to look after our fish.
Haven't seen Speedy for a couple of days.

I am hoping that we get a dahlia grower 'Baby Boom' now, too many loses recently. Heaven must have a vast new field full of dahlias this year.

Fish Tank Update! Spotted Speedy We have been using some magnetic wipers to wipe off the brown algae. We have a bucket with 'tap safe' chemical added, waiting for it to reach the same temperature as the tank. Once the algae debrie settles and the bucket of water is at the right temperature we can psiophen off the gravel and do a parchal water drain and replace. Then we are going to clean the filter out. We are hoping that the chemical test will show that our tank conditions are increasing. When we get it about right we are going to have a couple of more. This time it is going to be Daddy and Mummy choosing.
