So it will be Kent dahlia society 50th anniversary show this year and we will have a special anniversary class and I may need a yellow medium semi cactus. I won't gamble on Eastwood moonlight ( although would like to) they will have to be uncovered so I have shortlisted 3 ruskins Avenger Sunshine Harmony Anyone have any other suggestions ? Not ryecroft Helen as heard it spots if uncovered. My Dad suggested Narrows Tricia. When he has grown it is a large and a job to get it to grow down to a Medium but it is a good dahlia. Good Luck with what you go with. What other dahlias are needed for the Kent 50th Anniversary show?

Funnily enough Moonlight I was offered hamari accord syn narrows Tricia and good stock. John Cullen had super blooms of it in Kent last year. Your dad will know of him. Here is Johns Kent championship winning vase beating Dave Spencer he scored big with the hamari accord. He used hamari accord , westerton folly, ryecroft Jan and Mary's jomanda . Lovely exhibit the Mary's moved after judging was not staged like this.

I still have a lot to decide Moonlight I really do not know what I will grow I keep changing my mind. Only things for sure are Ryecroft zoe Greenways zoe Winholm diane Tom mcclelland Garden friends All the rest up in the air. Will grow most of what I have even as just a single to keep stock in front garden.

What are the different vases in the 50th Anniversary Class? The blooms must be yellow or gold in colour as classed by the nds Moonlight The variety does not have to be classified but the colour must be predominately yellow or golden. Their will be two sections the open for Section a and section b and then section c members and you cannot show in both. The thing that I don't know yet is if it is two or three vases. Each must be a different class of dahlia. It will have much bigger prize money . So in section a and b class open Med Dec x 3 Med cactus or semi cactus x 3 Sml Dec x 5 Min Dec x 5 Min ball or large Pom x 5 Small ball x 5 Small cac or semi cactus x 5 Min cac x 5 Waterlily x 5 Collerette x 3 Fim x 3 Pom x 6 Members which I will go for with my possible varieties Med Dec x 3 Med cac or semi cac x 3 (Ruskin avenger ? Or narrows Tricia ? ) Small or min cac or semi cac x 3 (greenways zoe) Small Dec x 3 ( winholm Diane or maybe primrose Diane as I might change my Diane) Min Dec x 3 Ball or large pom x 3 Waterlily x 3 Pom x 3 Collerette ? Not Included as of yet . If it is I have two seedlings but I don't want to push them for numbers . Just want to trial them again and possibly enter the seedling class all being well. I have been going through all my numbers and so far it's 140 plants which is really pushing it for me and my space. 100 to 120 more realistic or I have to cut some varieties to keep realistic numbers. Min 5 per variety and that's barely a min. Needs to be more than that each want 10 or 12 diane really and the same in the "bankers" like zoe maybe can afford less in zoe as grow it 12 to 14 blooms up Need to really think about starting to cut out varieties and a lot of them really although some I know I could grow much better ( like the med, dianes , kiwis but can I risk it ) also I did want to defend my open class bi colour with kenora sunset that might have to go. Saying that I won it from one plant ! Luck ! Hahaha

And me Moonlight I thought they where fabulous ! Not a good picture to be honest. He staged next to me and I was drooling made my candy look total garbage which they where ! Hahaha He had tried to grow as a medium but went over size and showed them up as dual classification. In the championship he scored 22 points for them against 17 for Dave's and Darrens hillcrest candy. I will figure my lot out. Let's see what I get cuttings from and what I successfully root. ian I won't be growing it. Stick with avenger give it a bash if I get cuttings and can root them. Lots to learn about a lot of varieties and classifications. Tiny steps into the fire I go . Hehehe should be a laugh this year.

Gave a light spray of tepid water today to them.
Not started all yet the rest boxed up will start them end of Jan to mid Feb.

I might well live to regret starting some so early Moonlight and Lou78W . Let's see what happens. The rest I won't look at until at least the end of Jan and set them up but no heat or moisture until mid Feb . The pot tubers end of Feb

Raymnd just a quickie Avenger is good you will find the blooms will come all at one go it is a difficuly one to master but quite a nice Dahlia. Sunshine is good and grown to its potential looks like a moonlight, one of the problems with it is that if traveling any distance with it then it tends to mark as the florets rub against each other. (I have also seen this on Narrows Tricia Dave Gillam had a set at Harrogate one time that had marked in this way.
Any early shoots you get just keep cutting them back until you want to start taking cuttings
Good Luck

Many thanks ian I think I will grow avenger like I did kenora sunset. The blooms all came at once on that. Worth a dabble. Noted on sunshine but I will give avenger a punt. If sunshine and Tricia marks so easily. Ruskin Michelle I was going to grow numbers but changed my mind due to the size. Will grow three and try it four up less aggressive stop and gradually thin it down. A bit more feed as well. I will also use the aquatic basket pots for that one as hardly made any tuber for me. One is ok the other two very poor there is a little but not much. When you say keep cutting back the early shoots you mean like stopping them. Don't cut off just above the tuber like a cutting ? Sorry to ask. All the best
