Have seen a couple of less frequent visitors in the garden this week, the coal tits have made a flying visit (boom boom) & the other day there was a chaffinch in the conifer tree. I know chaffinches are very common but I've only seen about 4 or 5 here in total over the last 10 years or so!

It must be nearly winter! ;D A robin has started visiting the garden again after being away most of the summer & the little flocks of long tail tits & coal tits with the bossy great tit with them have reappeared too looking for food.

Lou that is a real shame. However, it seems quite soon to have apples and next year will be even better. You will have to net the trees.

Maybe it could be early arrivals of fieldfares or redwings eating them Lou? Still no compensation but it doesn't sound so bad if it's some 'exotic' migrants rather than some greedy local pigeons!

The garden birds have started eating more food now and most seem to have finished their moult. A young Jay has been visiting the bird table most days (for the peanuts I think).

Every bird here screeches and the curlews howl well into the night. The kookaburras laugh loudly.

I like the sound a Kookaburra makes ;D The birds are eating me out of house and home for now. And i can't believe the price of peanuts I won't be buying peanuts this year i'm afraid

I've only seen kookaburras in zoos but they always look very cute & intelligent birds. The robin is in the garden very day now waiting for me to put suet pellets & mealworms out. I'm not buying peanuts this year either Rosie, apart from the cost the birds seem to have gone off them & leave them to go mouldy & the squirrel can't figure out how to get into the nut feeder I put up for it so it's a waste of time & money all round.

I have taken the fat balls down off the bird feeder, in the back garden. I noticed a rat feedng on the bits on the floor off the fat balls. We do not need rats.

I use blue grain which the mole catcher gives me, otherwise it would be expensive getting the council in for rats. I haven't had any for about 4 years now and while I was away, the mice in the shed had eaten through the bird ball plastic container and then the rat poison plastic container which is inside this and eaten the lot. That can't be good for them! One died happy as it had eaten through the plastic to the fat balls and ate these, but could not get out as the sides were slippy and steep. This is because the shed was not in use while I was away.

The peanuts here are slow to go and go mouldy too. Perhaps I will follow your example. I can't remember what birds eat them actually. My husband always complains about the cost of the nyjer seed, but Wilkinsons seem to be the best price. I don't even see a goldfinch until I put this up and I haven't been to Ely to get them.

I've got some peanuts up Cherry which I had in already & I have seen a few of the bluetits on them but they haven't eaten many. There have been coal tits & tiny goldcrests in the garden over the last couple of weeks too, they still all come in little gangs, raid the place & then fly off together.
