I use parrafin up the allotment and for bottom heat for tubers in my greenhouse at home where I do my propagating.I also have a blow heater on a thermostat to keep the air temp above ten degrees.I paid £160 for a 45 gallon drum last august. Its cheaper bought then. Its saved me £65 on what I would have paid buying it buy the gallon this year.

Hi, I am getting ready to mark out my allotment for the planting of my dahlias. I have Poms, small ball, decs and some semi cactus.
I have marked out 3 foot rows with 2 foot paths inbetween.
What I am struggling with now is the spacing between the plants, obviously it is different for each type. The more I read on the internet the more confusing it is as everyone seems to have a different method.
I have four, three foot posts on each side of the row and I am going to use pea netting to support them stretched over the posts.
As an example I have been told to plant in the rows in triangles and for poms plant a foot apart.
Any further advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

There you go. These are the smalls. My beds are 3 foot wide, I space them 2 foot between plants along the bed, 18" apart width of the bed. By August they end up like this I surround each plant with 3 canes and use string tied around the plants in a circle to hold them up and keep them relatively neat. Giants and mediums i grow in 4 foot wide beds, 2 foot apart both ways.

Don't know about everyone else but the last week has been hell. Who said we want sunshine Yesterday and today have been particularly bad, having to water in the pots 3 times a day. Been starting at 7am and finishing at midnight. Got 90% of them planted out at home now. Now it's over to the allotment to start preparing a dahlia bed or two. Only 3 months late

Been measuring up in the new garden and planting area for dahlias is 40 feet by 25 feet.I have worked out if I plant each plant 22 inches apart in double rows with a 3 feet path in between I will get 4 double rows and 1 single row with 23 plants per row.Thats a grand total of 207 plants. In My other garden I grow 240 under cover very tightly and 24 poms outside.Thats 471 plants this year .I better start planting out.

Scrumpy those pics are so helpful. DC has promised to put some pictures on here also and Tel will be back on about 7th, so we might get more comparisons. Snute, you will be able to take all the examples and use whatever suits your personal growing conditions.
