Started cutting today for harrogate.I have cut 18 ruskin michelle,8 ruskin harmony and 8 hillcrest candy as medium cactus dont mind being cut early and the harmonys and candys are not covered and I did not want to risk another night.I have also caned 16 joan walkers ,10 marys jomanda ,18 jomanda and 6 leopold chloe on the plants so I can get a good start tomorrow.I only have the oakwood goldcrest, blyton softer gleam, poms and a few odds and sods to do.Bed early tonight for an early start.Get them all cut, tied in and will be off about 6 tomorrow night.

Well got back at 5 tonight.Exhausted, been up for 35 hours, what did I do go straight to the allotment to have a quick look round to see what will be there for my society show on sunday, then went home to bed for 3 hours.Had a great day but caught a bit of seconditus.I got 1 first 6 seconds, 2 thirds and we were second in the society class getting beat by 5 points by kent dahlia society aka dave spencer, dave gillam and andrew aspitall. The judge of our society show Bob Metters from chester le street won the individual championship by one point stopping dave gillam doing a claen sweep of english, welsh, scottish and harrogate,my good mate phill watson was a further point behind in third.I only managed 1 championship class the small ball mini ball pom using jomanda (which i scored highly for) marys jomanda and minley carol.

Poms let me down,I got the least for poms in the whole class.I finished third with dave gillam winning.I got the first ;D in the class for 2 vases of medium cac/semi cac with 2 vases of ruskin michelle which I moved from the 3 vase class when I saw I was up against the moonlights which won the class by 18 points.I cocked up a couple of times putting my best stand of joan walker and oakwood goldcrest in a class I had not entered (they would have won by a country mile) and I gambled on a mini dec ( the first I had cut) going through the ring and got an NAS .As for the other championship classes I could not get 5 blyton softer gleam for the ball class,a dahlia I did so well with last year ryecroft brenda t let me down for the small dec (blowing its centre when only half way back) and all my mini decs let me down for that class( too late). As for the experience if your passionate about growing and showing dahlias nothing can beat it ( the cameraderie is second to none ) and for anyone going to harrogate this weekend your in for a treat it's an amazing dahlia show and it seems (by the crowds today) that the dahlias is where people make a beeline to.Anyway have to go need to be up early to cut dahlias for sunday and start to plan for next year

The ups and downs of showing dahlias DC, one season we have the ammunition to go and compete with. The following season even if we used our usual growing methods we find the dahlia is just not right on the day, you will have too many to choose from at your next show. That's the way it is and can be very frustrating at times. ;D But it is great to catch up with other dahlia growers you may not see from one year to the next. Ps your still a Champion Dahlia grower on here mate.

Off to Wilsden Show in the morning because i have two cups to take back. Cut two dahlias out of the garden, will enter them in the single bloom class for any classification. If i did not have to go to take the cups back i would not have gone to the show, if i only had two blooms normally. Taking one Brenda T and one Marion Storer small decs.

Have just got home for the first time since I left at 7am shattered! Two shows for me today but well worth it as got silver medal, a cup and lots of firsts. There wasnt a lot of competition at one of the shows which is a shame as its always better to see more on the bench, we put in as many vases as we could though. I also stuck in a plate of blackberries and won a £20 voucher for the local garden centre as got best plate of fruit in the show, I was very pleased and shocked!!
In between staging and going back to shows we went down to Ayletts and walked round their two acre trial field and tomorrow I am driving all the way to Harrogate and back to take a look around (only 3.5 hours each way) I must be mad!! I will try and get some photos on later if I can.
