You are very good at finding your photos Moonlight. I can never find mine. Hi please can you kindly help, I have planted out 17 dahlia cuttings, now I am very worried because it's been raining so much and forecast is more rain on Wednesday, I live near east grinstead West Sussex. Will they be alright, as I usually plant on in larger pots and bring them on in my conservatory. I am very worried if they are going to be ok. Thank you Karen

Its always good to have new members who grow dahlias. How big are your cuttings?....your biggest danger is frost. is there any forecast?...did you harden them off before planting them out?......if it continues to rain, I suggest you cover your plants ....

Thankyou for the reply there is no risk of frost just rain, I bought most of my Dahlia cuttings from Halls of Heddon in Northumberland and a few from a local grower called Withypitts and they said they were ok to put straight in the ground.

Hi Karen, and welcome to the forum. I've been putting my cuttings out over the last 3 days, even with the rain. As long as your ground drains ok, you should be alright. My Halls cuttings arrived in February, so have grown on quite well, and Richard, who owns Withypitts, posts on here, so you should get some firm advice from him, but I'm sure they'll be fine . I'm more worried about the gusts of wind we keep getting .

You are very good at finding your photos Moonlight. I can never find mine. Most of the time I look in my Diary, I've got loads of photos, sometimes it makes things simpler to start with the Diary but this time with the Franz, I went through the photos brought back lots of memories.

Hope they do well for you. I get most of my plants from Halls, I don't live too far away, and as has already been said, Richard from Withypitts is a good supplier too and Richard is a member of the forum

I have always understood that dahlias need water and sunshine more than most. They are about 90% water anyway. ps my bedding dahlias are now at the bud opening stage and should be in flower in a few days. here in S. Wales we tend to get more rain than many other places so ok for dahlias and runner beans.

You are right sweetpea, sunshine and plenty of water when they are growing away strongly, but they will not tolerate been waterlogged. Quite a few years ago now, I lost over 50 plants in August because we had torrential rain and the bottom of my allotment had 4in of water stood on it for a couple of day. The dahlia's did not have their wellingtons on.
