Last year was a very big year for me I started growing dahlias and won the Novice cup. So Novice no more I entered some of the Intermediate classes. I entered: 1 vase with a Large/Giant - Trooper Dan. 1 vase x3 Poms - Willo's Violet. 1 vase x3 Miniature - Weston Pirate and Weston Corsair. 1 vase x3 Small - Ruskin Myra and Ryecroft Zoe.
With my left over blooms I entered Single Bloom challenge classes. The exception being my Nuland's Josephine in the any other classification of dahlia class which I picked specifically for that class (No large pom class)
Retrospectively I could have tried for the Intermediate Championship and would have then been 1 of 3 entries but I'm glad that I did them in separate classes. 1st, x2 2nd and a 3rd. With my Single Blooms I won x2 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd.
Wow or what! Brilliant

Getting worried about this cool weather now, it is certainly holding mine back now. There again if I do not get to Harrogate, the later shows will barring blooms damping off, get a right hammering.

Just been over to the new allotment, my seedling Wyn's Favourite, the few that were fully out have been bent over, with all the rain on them yesterday.

These were my entries. Front L-R Ruskin Myra 3rd, Jomanda 1st, Willo's Violet 2nd, Weston Pirate and Weston Corsair 1st, Willo's Violet 1st, Nuland's Josephine 2nd Back Right to left Trooper Dan 2nd, Ruskin Myra and Ryecroft Zoe 2nd and my poor Trooper Dan who was the only exhibit that didn't get placed. ah But he is lovely. All x3 were intermediate classes + the top right Trooper Dan single large / giant intermediate class. All other were entered in the open to all Single Bloom challenge. My Dad won the large, came 2nd Medium Dec and 3rd in Medium Cactus / Semi Cactus. I came 3rd in the Small Cactus / Semi Cactus with Ruskin Myra, 1st in the small Ball, 1st in the Pom with Willo's Violet and came 2nd in the any other classification with Nuland's Josephine a large pom which Dad won with an anemone. I like the Single Bloom challenge open to beginners and seniors alike.

I might get some covers for next year but don't want anything massive in the garden. Heard you can use umbrellas but don't know how to fix them without looking stupid.

Everything grown without covers and no I don't have an allotment or a big garden. Most of my dahlias I have only 1 plant but the highest number is 3 due to gift. Dad's don't have covers either.

Some of my entries in the novice class (all the ones shown were mine). Excuse the darkness of the picture but the show is held in an old stable block and the lighting is not that good.

The standard must be very high in the shows that I have entered there have only ever been 1 Novice class. Interesting the way different societies are. Were there a lot of other entries in the Novice classes?

Were there a lot of other entries in the Novice classes? Don't really think the standard has anything to do with the number of novice classes in a section. Yours might just be a smaller show. We have a large number of classes in championship, members and open sections.

Will have to go down to the allotment tomorrow, there is a lot of dahlia stems, that need a ring of Vaseline. Boring job.
