I've been trying to collect seed heads but think I've fought a loosing battle. The weather has probably finished off my dahlias today. We had strong winds, gusts, heavy rain, hail and a bit of thunder thrown in for good measure. There won't be time to dry out all the seed heads naturally. I can't pick everything in one go because it will rot before I get to look inside for seeds. Trying to think of alternatives. Try again next year?.....I managed to collect a couple of stems with "potential seeds" and they have disappeared from the greenhouse!!!!! btw--- I saw Clearview Louise today..........very nice !!

Totally. Will be seed hunting next year. I've got some so I can't complain but I was hoping to get some pom seeds this year but think I've missed my moment. Will have to see how it is tomorrow. I've managed to collect:
395 seeds from Nuland's Josephine, some Eastwood Moonlight, Peach Delight, Marston George, Edwin's Sunset and 2 seeds from my Kenora Valentine. All my seeds have come from single plants. So am happy.
Lou78W, where do you think the potential seeds have gone? Looks like you are going to have to become a Dahlia Detective.

The only reason why I want to help the seed heads dry out a bit as they are very wet is because I have more seed heads than I can go through. I just don't want them all to rot. My seeds are on kitchen towel drying out.

Hi ian I have emailed les it is still available so am ordering the tubor 2 of them. I am also ordering the root t grow lights heat mats etc... Jersie will be my main show variety along with zoe, winholm Diane and Mary's Jomanda. Will add some miniatures to this as well pirate and a min Dec. May try a pom. The rest in threes to try in garden display at front and see what I am capable of growing and playing with disbudding etc... Mostly small, med and one large. Jersie looks a really lovely dahlia hope I can grow it well along with the others. Was looking at Duncan Edwards for my only large . Does anyone grow it ? We had some Duncan Edwards in last year and wasn't a great fan. To get large it had to be grown three up and undercover we got a few blooms with white marking's. Its definitely a multi vase variety. Kenora Challenger, trooper Dan or good stock of Reg Keane are good larges. Jersie would do well up hear in Scotland as Frankie is one of the only ones that is able to grow a decent small cactus. @sean thanks for the advise on Duncan Edwards also to ian and also markb .I think I might go with hamari accord/narrows Tricia as I can play with that as either medium or large to learn. I think for this reason also I will try a candy. I don't particularly them as a dahlia personally but you can't fault their success on the show bench. The other option is a pastelle . I will not go for Duncan Edwards although I do want a good unfading red medium or large prefer a semi cactus. Saw hollyhill firelight on Euro dahlia. I also would like a medium in lilac. Was thinking staleen condessa but heard it's a bad tubor maker and really not top end now and inconsistent. Where in Scotland are you based Sean ? I am originally from Erskine. All my family still around they're or paisley or Glasgow. Hopefully I can come to the Scottish national one year when up visiting. Thanks again for all the advise. Too much choice and not enough space ! I have decided to drop winholm Diane for showing in favour of a min Dec . May still do it for garden display though. Have a great weekend everyone I won't as working the whole lot !

@raymond We are based in Falkirk area in central Scotland. Not a good place to grow moonlights or Dianne's but the pastelles grow great with us. They have good form but sometimes can get very big so just watch if you choose them. Raymond we grow collarettes and waterlilies, they are very good and produce lots of flowers. My Papa grows large cactus - he won the large championship before - hes looking to do again this year, He is growing Challanger, Reg keene(halls stock) and trying clearview Louise- which looks good in pictures. Always found hamari accord to be very flat and lack any depth. If you are looking for a mini dec you cant go wrong with dikara superb or marston George.
Many thanks Sean

I don't think Louise would be that good as a large on this years showing for me. First time I've tried it though. As it didn't throw up many breaks (4)on any of my plants, it looks like it wants to grow big, and will probably get to a "small" large easily, but it hasn't got the form of challenger or the keanes. For me, my 2nd flush hit the medium size easily with a lot better form. I'll be giving it another go next year on a double stop, then 8 up for the first flush( August) and the same for 2nd flush in September. Though in Scotland things grow slower I guess so probably no 2nd flush for you.

image hosting 12mbSeeing has we had a unexpected win at Harrogate with Garden Friends. We will have to give it a go in the open flowered Championship next year, this is for 3 vases. I have Teesbrook Redeye but need a couple more collerettes to go with these. Looking through the winter bulletin from the last 3 years, there does not seem to be a banker collarette, so I will have to make up my mind which two to purchase.

Tel what about Claire De lune won in Kent and wins a lot down here. Heard it's consistent. John Carter swears by it he went back to it after many years as he found nothing else matched it for consistency. He is trying Ann breckenfelder again also.

what sort of colour are you looking for? Not really bothered about colour, just realised I have a Hootenanny in a pot too but it does not give a lot of blooms, but maybe its because its restricted in a pot.
