In amongst my pim's moonlight last year, one of these appeared it was one of six blooms on the plant, so i checked for side shoots, found one and rooted it in August. It flowered mid november and had the same colour, which was promising. Grown it on, not much growth obviously over winter, but am hoping to get a few more cuttings from the leaf axils as they are starting to show a bit of life. Doesn't look like it is going to form a tuber yet, so i may have to wait until next year to get cuttings, but if i can secure it, anybody know how i can get it registered as my own cultivar? Thanks.

There is a section on the NDS site, that tells you how to register a new cultivar Scrumpy. www.dahlia-nds.co.uk

So, 'sport' is a nicer way of saying 'rogue' ? A sport is when something that should be, isn't at all ? I bought a tuber last spring, expected it to be pink and cream but it turned out all cream

On scrumpy's plant, it is the one stem that has sported, the other stems on it, are the colour they should be.

I hope your sport, is a slightly different colour to the other Moonlight sports, that are around Scrumpy. only ever seen eastwood and pims....led a sheltered life.....though i know there is a white, which it defnitely isn't, and a cream, which is more it's colour. On the other hand, heres the vase i entered at the show, primrose pastelle at the back...so it could be pale primrose with a dash of cream

As an update, managed to get two cuttings from the leaf axils . The original cutting didn't make a tuber and i lost it. One of the two cuttings has just flowered and has kept the colour. The 2nd cutting is showing no signs of buds. Both will be grown in 30 litre poly pots during the summer and i will try and take some more leaf axil cuttings and grow them in 5" pots and get some mini tubers. Everything geared up to next years nationals when i can enter the sports class to find out if it is a new colour.

Its good to hear you have managed to keep the sport Scrumpy. I do hope it is a different colour break to the other moonlights for you and fingers crossed you manage to get it to the national next year.

Will grow a lot of plants to make sure. Means that the other varieties will have to be cut back on. Gonna play around with timing my dahlias at the allotment this year to see how to get them ready for later shows....it'll be like starting afresh again
