Anyone else going through the dahlia catalogues?
Seen Marston Sharon is for sale, is this a new variety? Haven't managed to find a photo. Grew Marston George this year and I love it. Saw Barbarry Surprise at a show so put that very high on my wish list but then was told by another exhibitor that it doesn't flower for long. It did really well in one show but I don't remember seeing it in the other shows that I exhibited in. Saw Marston Suzanne and was told similar thing and that Barbarry Pip wasn't as good. Just want to ask other members what there experiences have been with these varieties including are they good seed parents? I've collected quite a lot of Marston George seeds this year, no idea of how many will germinate etc. but as I really like the deep dark varieties, wondered if the odds were in it's favour or basically 'you'd be lucky if you get anything from that one type of variety.'. I don't have a big garden or oodles of money, so everything that I get has to have something really special to make it worth the pennies, time and space. If not might have to stick with my Marston George and hope that I can over winter it.

Hi Moonlight barberry surprise looks lovely ian rates it highly and won Midlands with Mark woodforddahlia. I was going to try it as my main show min Dec but decided on ryecroft Jan as this will be uncovered. Marston Suzanne is lovely. Produces loads of blooms from what I was told but can go oversize easily if you intend to show it. Was told it really needs almost a triple stop. Also can get pretty big plant so my chairman told me. Frank Taylor has barberry surprise as does woodforddahlia . Marston Suzanne should be easy to find. My shopping list done for show just the display to sort and that is the hard one so many lovely ones. It Might be a case that every year it completely changes. I am going to try a moonlight Moonlight just don't know which one

Barbarry Pip still flowering for me. Still looking good. As for varieties not flowering for long, surely it is how you grow them? Mine would have stopped flowering in August if I had disbudded all the way down.

Everything that I grow has to live outside without covers, grew Kenora Valentine without covers and although it wasn't that deep, deep shade of red that I saw in the show last year, it still was a very 'red red'. Certainly not a faded looking red. If one of the factors that judges look for isn't colour based (with to my understanding the exception of 2 colour blooms, where you need matching blooms) then if mine are good enough they are worth exhibiting, so I've not been put off.

I have the Halls of Heddon Catalogue, I dare not buy any more, not enough room for what I have already got for next season.

Tel I have had the advance catalogue since September it is hard as you get confused tempted etc.... I have resisted so far ! I am very tempted to try kiwi Gloria and deborahs kiwi Probably to advanced for me curently but thought it would look good in the garden display lilac tone mixed with purple fading into peach onto pink orange then red and yellow. Harmonious colours mixed with bi colour and blends. Mostly small and med cactus semi cactus ball and min Dec. Been uploading images onto laptop to work it out.

A small decorative with Marston George colouring.

A small decorative with Marston George colouring. More likely to be a Brenda T x with Jomanda colouring. There have been a lot of seed heads on this years Mary's / Jomanda and have thus far resisted collecting them... Quite easy to spot Jomanda dna in my this year's seedlings.
