My dahlias are still covered and the membrane is still down so I think they will be safe from any frost for another week.I've cut them all down today and removed my water pipes so I can lift the ones I want next week, only goin to lift 4 or 5 of each variety as I have quite a lot of pot tubers. I am only planning for them to be up for about 4 weeks and I will be boxing them up again and putting on some heat around about the week before xmas.Pot tubers will be set away in january.

I was going to take up the rest of mine today, but it was raining then foggy for most of the day. Will see what the weather is like during the week now.

Yes lou thats about 2 weeks earler than i normally would .Tubers lifted 3 weeks later than normal .The reason being I have had 2 bad years overwintering tubers (lost everyone last year) so this year I want them out of the ground for as little time as possible so they have less chance to spoil.Any early cuttings will be stopped at about 3 pairs of leaves and used as mother plants (cuttings taken from them) and them plants will be used as next years pot tubers.

Hi DC, do you find 4 weeks long enough for the tuber to "rest" before starting them off again? Like you I aim to store them for a short a time as possible but aim for 6-8 weeks so they 'properly' stop growing before I get them on the bench.

Not sure richard this will be the first time of trying I will be lifting tubers on saturday 19 nov and will now be looking at boxing them up if not just before xmas just after. That will be tubers out 5/6 weeks shorter than they would be normally for me.I see dave gillam as put some straight onto gentle heat after lifting to stop them going dormant.

After a hard year I know I like a rest at the end of the season ;D Just collected the last of mine from the nursery field, they were lifted 4/5 days ago and the little rascals are throwing shoot, I'll have to put a stop to that

I shall give them a severe talking to Lou ;D Seriously, the standard process of cutting back, drying out and then trimming the stems right back usually gives them a clue

All 250 tubers undercover have been lifted and about 80 have been kept to go with the 160 pot tubers I have.I lifted my pom tubers 3 weeks ago and noticed a little mildew on today so a fan has been turned on to circulate some air.I will be trimming these down next week and dusting with sulphur powder the rest of the tubers will be done in 2/3 weeks when they have dried out a little.
