Well we have come to the end of another dahlia season. The forum from a dahlia growers point of view has done very well in attracting dahlia growers to the site. For those that show dahlias, everyone has had a successful season at their local shows and DC and Scrumpy at their big shows, Congratulations to everyone on that. My own personal satisfaction this season on the dahlia scene, after a few nerve wracking months wondering if my advice and timing would be right in helping WF enter her dahlia class at her local show, i was so elated and relived at the same time that between us WF took first place with her dahlias and wiped the smile of certain people faces. ;D

Tel, I wondered if you have seen the adverts for so called 'hardy' giant dahlias and if so what you think? I looked at the small print and it qualified the 'hardy' bit by saying 'They can be hardy if planted in a sheltered sunny spot.' They are all cactus or semi cactus varieties and the 'Giant' part refers to their ultimate height not the bloom Grow to 4' - 4 1/2' which is nothing out the ordinary. not keen on these misleading ads.

I think a lot of gardeners will be disappointed if they belive the add, not seen it myself, in a normal winter, if you live in parts of the country that is not subject to severe frosts and you have sandy well drained soil and the tuber is planted deep enough there is a good chance they would survive. Personally i would not chance it up here, even in a relatively mild winter.

the rest of the smalls and mediums and finally the giants They look good until you get close up Never mind, i'm pleased with what we've cut and i'll be showing lots of new varieties. Just a question of what goes where. I'll start planning that this afternoon as i get them ready for transporting to the show tonight.
